Meet Bud and Lorraine Zomok, lifelong friend Sue Berntsen and Lorraine's brother Kenn Clark – proud Glendale locals and passionate keepers of The Spicery’s lineage. On October 6, 2022, they reopened The Spicery with fresh energy, deep respect for the past, and a whole lot of heart. The Zomok’s live in a century-old home three blocks from The Spicery and own Memory Lane Trinkets and Treasures just next door to the tearoom, making them true cornerstones of the neighborhood they call home. With their vibrant community spirit and shared vision, this family-focused team brings new sparkle to an old soul. The Spicery is more than just a tearoom – it’s a living time capsule where heritage, hospitality, and homemade goodness come together under one iconic Victorian roof.

Built in 1895, the elegant Victorian home we now call The Spicery began its journey with Victor and Lilly Messinger. Victor was a member of the first graduating class of Stanford University and Glendale’s first town clerk. The couple founded the town’s first library with a donation of 400 books from their personal collection. The Messinger’s filled their home with purpose and pioneering spirit until 1936.
That same year, Harold and Mae Brewster made this house their family home for the next five decades. They raised four sons here, planted citrus trees, bloomed rose gardens, and built memories still shared with us today – sometimes literally, when two of the Brewster sons stop by for lunch! You can even spot family photos on the library mantle, lovingly shared by the Brewster family.

Lifelong Glendale resident Martha Campbell founded The Spicery in 1986. One of Arizona’s first tearooms, Martha restored the historic Messenger-Brewster home to a bustling happy restaurant. Martha created a gathering place beloved by locals and visitors alike with delicate china dishes and teacups, vintage linens, and comfort in every corner. Her legacy lives on in every recipe, every teacup, and every treasured celebration. Martha retired and sold the tearoom to Matt Borowski. Martha passed away a few years ago and is greatly missed.
Matt grew up in Glendale and went to Unit 1 Elementary School and Glendale High School. Matt worked alongside Martha for many years. Upon her retirement, Matt purchased The Spicery in 2010 and made wonderful improvements to the restaurant. Matt retired in 2022 and the restaurant was purchased by Bud and Lorraine Zomok alongside partners Sue Berntsen and Kenn Clark.
