Bud and Lorraine Zomok, along with their dear friend Sue Berntsen and Lorraine's Brother Kenn are honored to continue the long-standing traditions of The Spicery, Glendale's Original Tearoom. The team is excited to keep all the treasured memories and history alive of this special place in Historic Downtown Glendale. The Spicery reopened on October 6, 2022.
Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the house was built in 1895 by Victor and Lilly Messenger. In 1936 Harold and Mae Brewster purchased the home. The Brewster’s planted citrus and pecan trees. Mae planted the original roses and a Victory Garden. In 1987 the four Brewster boys sold their childhood home to Martha W. Campbel

Campbell who had moved to Glendale in 1936 with her parents at the age of 4.
Lifelong Glendale resident Martha Campbell founded The Spicery three decades ago. One of Arizona’s first tearooms, Martha restored the historic Messenger-Brewster home to a bustling happy restaurant filled with the aroma of baking bread and the clink of china and silver. Martha retired and sold the tearoom to Matt Borowski. Martha passed away a few years ago and is greatly missed.
Matt grew up in Glendale and went to Unit 1 Elementary School and Glendale High School. Matt worked alongside Martha for many years. Upon her retirement, Matt purchased The Spicery in 2010 and made wonderful improvements to the restaurant. Matt retired in 2022 and the restaurant was purchased by Bud and Lorraine Zomok alongside partners Sue Berntsen and Kenn Clark.
